01 — Overview

What Is the CAPM Certification?

The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is PMI's foundational certification for project practitioners. It is designed for candidates who understand PM principles but have not yet accumulated enough project leadership experience to qualify for the PMP. While the PMP requires 36–60 months of leading projects, the CAPM has no work experience requirement whatsoever — only a secondary school diploma and 23 hours of PM education.

The CAPM tests knowledge of the PMBOK Guide — PMI's Project Management Body of Knowledge — covering the five process groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, Closing) and ten knowledge areas (Integration, Scope, Schedule, Cost, Quality, Resource, Communications, Risk, Procurement and Stakeholder Management).

It is most valued by: students preparing to enter PM roles, professionals transitioning into project management from another field, and people who work on projects as team members and want to formalise their knowledge with a recognised credential.

💡
CAPM vs PMP — which should you pursue? If you have less than 2 years of PM experience, start with the CAPM. If you have 36+ months of project leadership experience and a degree (or 60 months without), go straight to the PMP — it carries significantly more weight with employers. The CAPM is a stepping stone, not an endpoint.
🌍
UK candidates: For UK-based candidates, PRINCE2 Foundation is often a stronger entry-level choice — it is more widely requested in UK job descriptions and the training is directly aligned to how most UK public and private sector organisations run projects. The CAPM is stronger in the US, Middle East and PMI-ecosystem organisations. See the Best PM Certifications guide → for a ranked comparison.
02 — Eligibility Requirements

CAPM Eligibility — What You Need to Apply

The CAPM has the most accessible eligibility requirements of any major PM certification. There are two requirements — and neither involves work experience.

1
Secondary diploma (or equivalent)
High school diploma, GCSEs, A-levels, Baccalaureate or any equivalent secondary qualification. No degree required. No minimum GPA or grade threshold.
2
23 hours of formal PM education
Must be from a structured PM course — not self-study. An online CAPM prep course satisfies this. Available from $49–$300. Many candidates complete this in one week.
Education Level
Secondary diploma
High school, GCSEs, A-levels or international equivalent. No degree needed.
PM Experience
None required
The CAPM has no work experience requirement — unlike the PMP (36–60 months).
PM Education
23 contact hours
From a structured course. Online options available from $49. Counts toward PMP's 35-hour requirement later.
Application Process
Online via PMI
Submit at PMI.org. No audit as complex as PMP. Typically approved within 5 business days.
Good news for future PMP candidates: The 23 hours of PM education you complete for the CAPM counts toward the PMP's 35-hour education requirement. You will need an additional 12 hours to meet PMP eligibility — most candidates satisfy this with a single online course.
03 — Exam Format

CAPM Exam Format and Structure

The CAPM exam is delivered online via Pearson VUE — either at a test centre or via online proctoring from home. Here is everything you need to know about the format.

What the Exam Tests

The CAPM exam is knowledge-based — it tests your understanding of PMBOK process groups, knowledge areas, inputs, tools and outputs. Unlike the PMP (which is scenario-heavy and tests applied judgement), the CAPM has more direct recall questions. You need to know:

1
The 5 Process Groups
Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, Closing — and which processes fall within each group.
2
The 10 Knowledge Areas
Integration, Scope, Schedule, Cost, Quality, Resource, Communications, Risk, Procurement, Stakeholder Management.
3
ITTOs — Inputs, Tools & Outputs
The specific inputs, tools and techniques, and outputs for each of the 49 PMBOK processes. This is where most study time goes.
4
Key PM Concepts & Formulas
EVM formulas (CPI, SPI, EAC, ETC, VAC), float calculation, critical path, communication channels, risk probability × impact.
04 — Exam Cost

CAPM Exam Cost 2026

The CAPM is significantly cheaper than the PMP. Joining PMI before applying saves $115 on the exam fee — making membership pay for itself immediately.

Cost ItemPMI MemberNon-MemberNotes
PMI Membership$139/yr$0Saves $115 on exam fee — joins for net saving of $24 before other benefits
CAPM Exam Fee$255$370Paid after application approval via Pearson VUE
23-Hour PM Course$49 – $500Online Udemy/Coursera options from $49. Required for application.
Practice Questions$0 – $79Free questions available at Sikhana Seekho. Paid simulators from $49.
Retake Fee$150$200Per attempt. Up to 3 attempts within 1-year window.
💰
Minimum realistic total: PMI membership ($139) + member exam fee ($255) + Udemy course ($49) = approximately $443. This is one of the most affordable internationally-recognised PM certifications available.
05 — How to Prepare

CAPM Study Guide — How to Prepare and Pass

Most candidates pass the CAPM in 4–8 weeks of part-time study. Here is a structured preparation approach.

Step 1 — Complete Your 23-Hour Course First

The 23-hour PM education requirement is not just a box to tick — the course content is the foundation of your exam preparation. Choose a course specifically designed for CAPM, not a generic PM course. Udemy's CAPM prep courses (from $49 during sales) cover all PMBOK processes and are widely used by successful candidates.

Step 2 — Master the PMBOK Structure

Download the PMBOK Guide from PMI.org (free with PMI membership). Create a summary table of all 49 processes mapped to their process group and knowledge area. This one-page reference becomes the spine of your revision. Focus especially on the ITTOs (Inputs, Tools & Techniques, Outputs) for each process — these are frequently tested.

Step 3 — Learn the Key Formulas

The CAPM tests EVM calculations, float/critical path, communication channels and risk calculations. Use the free EVM calculator to practise until the formulas are automatic. The most commonly tested: CV = EV − AC, CPI = EV ÷ AC, EAC = BAC ÷ CPI, Communication Channels = n(n−1)/2.

Step 4 — Practice Questions

Complete at least 300 practice questions before your exam. Focus on questions that test process knowledge — "which process does X belong to?", "what is the output of Y?", "which tool is used in Z?". Score consistently above 70% on full practice exams before booking.

Recommended study timeline: Week 1–2: complete the 23-hour course. Week 3–4: PMBOK deep-dive and ITTO memorisation. Week 5–6: practice questions and formula drilling. Week 7–8: full mock exams and weak-area review. Book the exam when scoring 72%+ on full mocks.
06 — CAPM vs PMP

CAPM vs PMP — Which Should You Get?

The most common question candidates ask. The answer depends entirely on your experience level.

📌
Decision rule: If you have fewer than 2 years of PM experience — get the CAPM now and work toward the PMP. If you have 36+ months leading projects with a degree — skip the CAPM and go straight to the PMP. The PMP returns far greater employer value and salary uplift, and the CAPM is not a prerequisite for it.
07 — Alternatives

CAPM vs Other Entry-Level PM Certifications

The CAPM is not the only entry-level option. Here is how it compares to the other main alternatives in 2026.

Our recommendation by market: For the UK — PRINCE2 Foundation. For the US, Middle East, or global PM roles — CAPM or go straight to PMP if eligible. For tech sector entry-level roles — Google PM Certificate + CAPM is a strong combination. See the full Best PM Certifications guide →
08 — After the CAPM

What to Do After Getting Your CAPM

The CAPM is a foundation, not a destination. Here is how to build on it strategically.

Build PM Experience Immediately

The CAPM opens doors to coordinator and junior PM roles. Take every project leadership opportunity you can — even internal improvement projects, volunteer work or freelance project management counts. You need 36 months of documented project leadership experience (with a degree) to qualify for the PMP. Start the clock now.

Move to PMP Within 5 Years

The CAPM expires after 5 years and cannot be renewed with PDUs. Before it expires, aim to have accumulated enough experience to apply for the PMP. If you let the CAPM lapse without moving to PMP, you would need to retake the CAPM exam from scratch. Plan your career progression to avoid this.

Consider Agile Credentials in Parallel

Many PM roles in 2026 require both traditional and agile knowledge. While building toward the PMP, consider adding the CSM (Certified ScrumMaster) or PSM I (Professional Scrum Master) — both are achievable without extensive experience and round out your PM credential profile significantly.

09 — Study Resources

10 — FAQ

CAPM — 8 Questions Answered

For someone with no PM experience, yes — it demonstrates foundational PM knowledge and makes a CV more competitive for coordinator and junior PM roles. For someone with 2+ years of PM experience, the PMP is a better investment of time and money and carries significantly more weight with employers. The CAPM is most valuable for: final-year students entering PM, career changers building their first PM credential, and professionals working adjacent to projects who want to formalise their knowledge.
Most candidates prepare in 4–8 weeks of part-time study. The 23-hour prep course provides the foundation. Add 2–3 weeks of self-study using practice questions and PMBOK review. The exam is knowledge-based rather than scenario-heavy (unlike the PMP), so memorisation of PMBOK process groups, knowledge areas and ITTO relationships is more important for CAPM preparation than it is for PMP preparation.
Yes — once you meet PMP eligibility requirements (36 months leading projects with a degree, or 60 months without), you can apply for the PMP directly. Holding the CAPM gives you a head start — you will already know PMBOK structure, PMI exam format and PM terminology. The 23-hour CAPM education also counts toward the PMP's 35-hour requirement, reducing the additional training needed to just 12 more hours.
PMI does not publish official CAPM pass rate data. Based on candidate reports, the estimated first-attempt pass rate is around 70–75%. Candidates who complete a structured 23-hour course and practise 300+ exam-style questions before sitting consistently perform well. The main risk is underestimating the ITTO (inputs, tools, outputs) content — candidates who skip this typically struggle.
The CAPM is valid for 5 years. Unlike the PMP, you cannot renew it with PDUs — the only way to maintain a PMI certification after 5 years is to move to the PMP (which is renewable with PDUs) or retake the CAPM exam. Most candidates use the 5-year window to gain PM experience and qualify for the PMP before the CAPM expires. Plan accordingly when you start — the 5 years goes quickly.
Yes — the CAPM is available via Pearson VUE online proctoring, which lets you sit the exam from home or any private location. Requirements include a stable internet connection, a webcam, a quiet room without other people, and a clean desk. You cannot have notes, books or a second monitor. The online proctored experience is the same exam as the test centre version.
Partially — the 23 hours of PM education you complete for the CAPM counts toward the PMP's 35-hour education requirement. You will need an additional 12 hours to satisfy the full PMP requirement. Most candidates complete this with a short PMP-specific course or a combination of webinars and structured learning. It means the CAPM application process effectively gives you a head start on PMP eligibility.
The CAPM is PMI's credential and is based on the PMBOK Guide — it covers PM as a body of knowledge. PRINCE2 Foundation is Axelos's credential and covers the PRINCE2 project management method — a specific process framework. The CAPM is stronger in the US, Middle East and global PMI-ecosystem organisations. PRINCE2 Foundation is stronger in the UK, Europe and Commonwealth countries where PRINCE2 is the dominant public sector framework. If you are based in the UK or targeting UK employers, PRINCE2 Foundation is the stronger first credential.
