What Counts as PMP Project Leadership Experience?
This is the most misunderstood part of PMP eligibility. PMI is specific: you must have been leading and directing projects — not just participating in them. Here is a clear breakdown of what counts and what does not.
| Experience Type | Counts? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time project manager role | ✓ Yes | Core qualifying experience |
| Freelance / contract PM work | ✓ Yes | Must document client, project and your specific role |
| Team lead managing a project | ✓ Yes | Title doesn't matter — leadership activities do |
| Consulting with PM responsibilities | ✓ Yes | Document your leadership activities clearly |
| Volunteer project leadership | ✓ Yes | Non-profit and charity work qualifies |
| Part-time PM alongside another role | ✓ Yes | Count only hours spent on PM activities |
| Team member (no leadership role) | ✗ No | Must be leading the project, not just contributing |
| Functional/operational management | ✗ No | Managing people or departments ≠ leading projects |
| PM education or training time | ✗ No | Study time counts toward 35 hours, not experience |
How to Document Your Experience
For each project in your application, PMI requires you to provide the following information. Keep this documentation ready before you start your application — especially if your application is selected for audit.
What Counts as 35 Hours of PM Education?
