The Two PMP Eligibility Paths
PMI sets eligibility based on your highest level of education. Both paths require the same 35 hours of formal PM training, but differ on how much project leadership experience you need. All experience must have been gained within the last 8 years from your application date.
Path A — Degree Holders

What Counts as PMP Project Leadership Experience?
This is the most misunderstood part of PMP eligibility. PMI is specific: you must have been leading and directing projects — not just participating in them. Here is a clear breakdown of what counts and what does not.

Overlapping projects: If you were leading two projects simultaneously, the overlapping months only count once. For example, leading two projects for 6 months counts as 6 months of experience — not 12. PMI requires non-overlapping months of project leadership.
How to Document Your Experience
For each project in your application, PMI requires you to provide the following information. Keep this documentation ready before you start your application — especially if your application is selected for audit.

Organisation name and your job title
The company or client you worked for and your official or functional job title during the project.

Project title and brief description
A clear project name and 2–3 sentences describing what the project delivered and your specific leadership responsibilities.

Project start and end dates
Month and year of when you started and finished leading the project. All experience must fall within the last 8 years.

Total hours of PM leadership on the project
Estimate the hours you personally spent leading the project — not the total project duration or team hours. Be reasonable and accurate.

PM process groups you led
Indicate which PMBOK process groups you were involved in: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, Closing.

How to Apply for the PMP — Step by Step
Once you have confirmed your eligibility, the application process takes 30–60 minutes to complete online. Here is the exact sequence from start to exam day.

Create a PMI account and join as a member
Go to pmi.org and create a free account. Join PMI for $139/year — membership saves $150 on the exam fee ($405 vs $555), gives you free access to PMBOK 7 and the Agile Practice Guide (worth $100+ combined), and pays for itself immediately.

Step 2
Complete the online application
Log in to your PMI account and complete the PMP application form. For each project, enter the organisation name, your role, project dates, hours spent on PM activities, and a brief description of your responsibilities. Be accurate — PMI audits 25% of applications.

Wait for PMI approval (5–10 business days)
PMI reviews applications within 5–10 business days. If selected for audit, you will have 90 days to submit supporting documents. If not audited, you will receive an approval email. Begin studying now — do not wait for approval before starting preparation.

Pay the exam fee
PMI members pay $405 USD. Non-members pay $555 USD. Payment is made online through the PMI portal. Once payment is processed, you will receive an eligibility ID from Pearson VUE to schedule your exam.

Use your eligibility ID to book your exam at a Pearson VUE test centre or as an online proctored exam from home. You have one year from application approval to sit and pass the exam. Book your date as motivation to commit to a study schedule.
