This page explains the written PMP eligibility rules and the tricky cases: what counts as project experience, how overlapping months work, what training counts and what happens in an audit. I walk every one of my students through this same checklist before they apply.

Quick Answer
PMP eligibility is the set of education, experience and training requirements PMI sets before you can apply for the PMP exam. There are two paths. With a four-year degree: 36 months of experience leading projects plus 35 hours of project management training. With a secondary (high school) diploma: 60 months of experience leading projects plus 35 hours of training. The experience must be within the last 8 years, and months where projects overlap count only once. The hard part is rarely the rule itself. It is deciding which of your months really count.
From my experience: Many of my PMP students come from engineering and construction, like me. On my projects in the UAE, I led site teams, subcontractors and consultant approvals long before anyone called me a project manager. Most of that counted. When I check my students' applications, the mistake I see most is not missing experience. It is describing the work as "attended meetings" and "supported the team" instead of what they actually led.

The Two PMP Eligibility Paths
PMI decides your path by your highest level of education. Both paths need the same 35 hours of project management training. They differ only in how many months of project leadership you need. Count only experience from the last 8 years before you apply.
Path A: Degree Holders
Bachelor's degree or equivalent (4-year)

What Counts as PMP Project Leadership Experience?
This is the part most people get wrong. PMI wants experience of leading and directing projects, not just working on them. Your job title does not matter. What you actually did does. Here is what counts and what does not.

Overlapping projects: If you led two projects at the same time, those months count once. For example, leading two projects side by side for 6 months gives you 6 months of experience, not 12. PMI counts calendar months of project leadership, not the sum of your projects.
Edge Cases I Get Asked About
Here is a worked example. Say you have a degree, and in the last 8 years you led Project A from January 2021 to December 2022 (24 months) and Project B from July 2022 to June 2024 (24 months). July to December 2022 overlaps, so you count those 6 months once. Your total is 42 months, not 48. That is still enough for the 36-month degree path.
- Experience older than 8 years: it does not count, even if it was your biggest project.
- Gaps between projects: fine. The months do not need to be continuous.
- A site engineer or coordinator role: it can count if you planned work, led people, managed risks or reported progress. Describe those tasks, not the title.
- Ongoing project: count only the months up to your application date.
How to Document Your Experience
For each project in your application, PMI asks for the details below. Get them ready before you start, so that if your application is picked for audit you can back up every line.

Organisation name and your job title
The company or client you worked for and your official or functional job title during the project.

Project title and brief description
A clear project name and 2 to 3 sentences describing what the project delivered and your specific leadership responsibilities.

Project start and end dates
Month and year of when you started and finished leading the project. All experience must fall within the last 8 years.

Months you spent leading the project
PMI counts experience in months. Give the months you personally led the project, not the whole project timeline if you joined late or left early. Be honest and exact.

What the project was and what you led
Describe the project objective, the outcome, your role and the work you led. Write it in your own words, in the first person, and make the leadership part clear.

05: Application
How to Apply for the PMP: Step by Step
Once you know you qualify, the online application takes 30 to 60 minutes if your project details are ready. Here is the order from start to exam day.

Step 1
Create a PMI account and join as a member
Go to pmi.org and create a free account. Join PMI for $139 per year. Membership saves $250 on the exam fee ($405 versus $655), gives you free access to PMBOK 8 and the Agile Practice Guide (worth $100 or more combined), and pays for itself immediately.

Step 2
Complete the online application
Log in to your PMI account and fill in the PMP application. For each project, enter the organisation, your role, the dates and a short description of what you led. Be exact. Some applications are picked at random for audit.

Step 3
Wait for PMI approval (5 to 10 business days)
PMI reviews applications within 5 to 10 business days. If selected for audit, you will have 90 days to submit supporting documents. If not audited, you will receive an approval email. Begin studying now. Do not wait for approval before starting preparation.

Step 4
Pay the exam fee
PMI members pay $405 USD. Non-members pay $655 USD. Payment is made online through the PMI portal. Once payment is processed, you will receive an eligibility ID from Pearson VUE to schedule your exam.

Step 5
Schedule your exam with Pearson VUE
Use your eligibility ID to book your exam at a Pearson VUE test centre or as an online proctored exam from home. You have one year from application approval to sit and pass the exam. Book your date as motivation to commit to a study schedule.

Step 6
Prepare and pass
Most first-attempt passers spend 2 to 4 months preparing, averaging 1 to 2 hours per day. Follow my free 12-week study plan, complete 500 or more practice questions and target 75% or higher on full practice exams before sitting the real thing.
Audit warning: PMI picks some applications at random for audit. If yours is picked, you will need a copy of your degree or diploma, signed confirmation from a supervisor or manager for each project, and proof of your 35 hours of training. Get these ready before you submit. Giving false information can lead to your application being rejected and further action from PMI, so never stretch your months or your role.

Yes. Freelance, contract and consulting project leadership experience all counts. What matters is that you were actively leading and directing projects. Document each engagement with the client or organisation name, project title, your role, dates and hours of PM leadership. Be accurate. PMI may audit your application.
The 35 hours must come from a formal, structured education provider covering PM topics. Accepted sources include PMI Registered Education Providers, accredited universities, online courses such as Udemy or Coursera, employer-provided training programmes, and PMI chapter events. The CAPM certification also satisfies the full 35-hour requirement. Self-study and reading do not count.
For each project, note the organisation, your job title, the project name, start and end dates, and a short description of the objective, outcome and what you led. You do not upload proof when you apply. But if you are picked for audit, PMI will ask for signed confirmation from a supervisor, your education certificate and your training certificate.
You will have 90 days to send a copy of your degree or diploma, signed confirmation of your project experience from a supervisor or manager, and a certificate for your 35 hours of training. Use the same dates and descriptions as in your application. If what you wrote does not match what your supervisor signs, that is where problems start.
Applications not selected for audit are typically reviewed within 5 to 10 business days. If audited, allow 90 days to submit documents plus additional review time. Once approved, you have one year to sit and pass the exam. Start studying while waiting. Do not lose those days.
Yes. PMI does not require the title "Project Manager." Titles like Team Lead, Operations Manager, IT Manager, Programme Coordinator and Consultant all qualify, as long as your actual responsibilities involved leading and directing projects. Document your specific project leadership activities clearly, not just your job description.
