Who KICKOFF is for

  • People who manage projects informally and want a simple structure.
  • Team members who want to understand what their project manager is doing.
  • Students and career changers testing whether project management suits them.
  • Small business owners who need a lightweight way to plan work.

What should you do after KICKOFF?

KICKOFF gives you the vocabulary and a few templates. The next step is to use them. Pick a small real piece of work, such as an event, a home project or a task at work, and use the templates to plan it from start to finish.

Then decide on a learning path. If you want a recognised entry-level credential, CAPM requires 23 hours of project management education, and the exam costs $225 for PMI members and $300 for non-members in 2026. The Google Project Management Certificate is another popular option and counts towards CAPM’s education requirement.

If you already have project experience, look at the PMP requirements: 36 months of leading projects with a 4-year degree, or 60 months without, plus 35 contact hours of training. KICKOFF does not provide those hours on its own, but it is a good refresher before you start a full course.

Finally, keep your KICKOFF badge and templates. Adding the badge to LinkedIn shows employers you are investing in your skills, and the templates are a handy starting point for future projects.

Agile or predictive: which version should you take?

Choose the predictive version if your work has a fixed scope and deadline, such as construction, events, or regulatory projects. Choose the agile version if your team works in short cycles with changing requirements, such as software or marketing.

If you are unsure, take both. Each takes under an hour, and comparing them is one of the quickest ways to understand the difference between the 2 approaches, which is also tested on the PMP exam.

A 4-week plan after KICKOFF

Week 1: complete KICKOFF and download the templates. Choose 1 small real project to practise on, ideally something that lasts 4 to 8 weeks.

Week 2: use the templates to write a 1-page project plan with the goal, scope, key dates, a simple budget and the people involved. Share it with someone affected and ask for feedback.

Week 3: track progress weekly. Update the plan, note any risks or issues and how you dealt with them, and send a short status update to the people involved.

Week 4: close the project properly. Write down what went well, what you would change and what the result was. You now have a real example to talk about in interviews, and a clear sense of whether project management suits you.

From there, decide on your next learning step. Many learners move on to a longer course of 20 to 35 hours, then sit CAPM or, with enough experience, the PMP.

Who benefits most from KICKOFF?

KICKOFF is ideal for people who manage projects informally without the title, such as team leaders, coordinators, engineers, marketers and small business owners. It is also useful for students considering a project management career who want to try the subject before paying for a course.

Experienced project managers can use it too, especially the version they use less. A predictive project manager can take the agile version in under an hour to refresh agile basics before a hybrid project or an exam.

Because it is free and takes under 60 minutes, there is very little risk in trying it. Many learners use it as a quick test of whether project management interests them before committing to a longer course or a certification.

Sign in with a free PMI account, choose your version and set aside an uninterrupted hour to finish it in one sitting.

How to get the most from KICKOFF

  1. Pick the approach that matches your work. Choose the agile course for evolving work and the predictive course for work with a clear, fixed scope.
  2. Apply it straight away. Use the templates on a real piece of work in the same week.
  3. Share your badge. Add it to LinkedIn to show you are building project skills.
  4. Plan your next step. KICKOFF is an introduction, not a certification. Treat it as a starting point.

What to do after KICKOFF

If you enjoyed it, the natural next step is an entry-level certification. The CAPM from PMI suits beginners who want a recognised credential, and the Google Project Management Certificate offers a longer, practical course. Once you have several years of experience leading projects, you can work towards the PMP.

✦

From my experience: I point new students to free PMI resources like KICKOFF when they are testing whether project management suits them. It is a low-risk way to learn the basics before paying for a course.
