How to Earn 60 PDUs for PMP Renewal — Free & Paid

Complete guide to earning your 60 Professional Development Units for PMP renewal. Every free and paid source covered, the Education vs Giving Back split explained, and a step-by-step walkthrough of logging PDUs in the CCRS.

📅 Updated: January 2026 🏆 Covers: All PDU categories and sources Read time: 10 minutes
⚡ Quick Answer

You need 60 PDUs per 3-year CCR cycle — at least 35 Education PDUs and up to 25 Giving Back PDUs. Within Education PDUs, a minimum of 8 PDUs per Talent Triangle area is required. You can earn 25–30 PDUs entirely for free through PMI webinars, practitioner work, volunteering and self-directed learning. The rest can be sourced cheaply through online courses.

The Basics

What Is a PDU and How Does It Work?

A PDU — Professional Development Unit — is PMI's unit of measurement for ongoing professional learning. One PDU equals one hour of qualifying activity. They are how PMI tracks that its certified professionals are staying current with the practice of project management.

Every PMP holder must earn 60 PDUs within their 3-year CCR (Continuing Certification Requirements) cycle. Miss the deadline and your certification moves to Suspended status. Miss the suspension grace period and it expires permanently — meaning a full re-exam.

The right mindset: Do not treat PDUs as a box-ticking exercise to do in a panic in year 3. Build them steadily — aim for 20 per year. Most sources that genuinely make you a better project manager also count as PDUs. The two goals align perfectly.

PDU Categories

Education PDUs vs Giving Back PDUs — The Split Explained

Your 60 PDUs are divided into two main categories. You must meet the minimum for Education PDUs — the maximum you can claim from Giving Back is capped at 25.

35+
Education PDUs
Structured or self-directed learning activities that advance your PM knowledge. Courses, webinars, conferences, reading and podcasts all qualify. Must cover the three PMI Talent Triangle areas with a minimum of 8 PDUs in each.
Minimum 35 of your 60 PDUs
Up to 25
Giving Back PDUs
Activities where you contribute your PM expertise to the profession or community. Working as a practitioner, volunteering, mentoring, creating content and teaching all count here. A great source of free PDUs.
Maximum 25 of your 60 PDUs
The PMI Talent Triangle

The Three Talent Triangle Areas — Minimums and What Counts

Within your Education PDUs, PMI requires a minimum of 8 PDUs in each of the three Talent Triangle areas. There is no maximum — you can earn all 35 Education PDUs in one area if you choose, as long as each area has at least 8.

Ways of Working

Technical PM skills — how projects are delivered using predictive, agile and hybrid approaches.

8 PDUs minimum
Examples: Agile courses, PMBOK study, scheduling tools, risk management, EVM training, Scrum certifications
👥

Power Skills

Leadership and interpersonal skills — how you lead people, resolve conflict and communicate.

8 PDUs minimum
Examples: Leadership courses, negotiation training, stakeholder management, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence
🌟

Business Acumen

Strategic and business knowledge — how projects connect to organisational strategy and outcomes.

8 PDUs minimum
Examples: Finance fundamentals, benefits realisation, change management, governance, portfolio management, strategy courses

The most common renewal mistake: PMs focus heavily on Ways of Working (technical PM) and neglect Power Skills and Business Acumen. Check your Talent Triangle balance regularly in the CCRS dashboard — do not get to month 30 and discover you need 16 PDUs in Business Acumen in three months.

If you need to top up your Education PDUs quickly or want structured courses with official PMI pre-approval, these paid sources offer the best value.

Udemy PM Courses
10–35 PDUs per course
Udemy's PM catalogue is the best-value paid PDU source available. Courses regularly go on sale for $13–$19. Look for courses that explicitly state PMI PDU approval and include a PDU certificate. Joseph Phillips's PMP course, Mike Clayton's PM courses and Andrew Ramdayal's agile courses are popular choices.

CCRS Walkthrough

How to Log PDUs in the CCRS — Step by Step

The CCRS (Continuing Certification Requirements System) is PMI's online portal where you track and report all PDUs. Access it through your myPMI account at pmi.org.

1
Log in to myPMI at pmi.orgGo to pmi.org, click "Sign In" and log in with your PMI credentials. From the dashboard, look for "Certifications" then "CCRS" or "Report PDUs." This is your central PDU dashboard showing your cycle dates, current totals and Talent Triangle breakdown.
2
Click "Report PDUs"On the CCRS dashboard, click the "Report PDUs" button. You will be taken to a form where you select the activity type first — this determines which fields appear and which PDU category and Talent Triangle area will be assigned.
3
Select your activity typeChoose the category that best matches your activity: Course or Training, Online or Digital Media, Organisational Volunteering, Creating New Knowledge, Working as a Practitioner, or Meeting or Conference. Each category has slightly different required fields.
4
Fill in the activity detailsEnter the activity title, provider or organisation, start and end dates, and the number of hours (= PDUs). For self-directed learning such as reading or podcasts, enter the resource title and estimated hours. For courses, enter the course name and provider. Select the Talent Triangle area that best fits the content.
5
Submit and verifyClick Submit. The PDUs appear in your dashboard immediately. Your Talent Triangle breakdown and total PDU count will update. Check that the PDUs have been applied to the correct area. Save any course certificates or completion evidence in a folder in case of audit.
6
Apply for renewal when you hit 60Once your dashboard shows 60 PDUs with at least 8 in each Talent Triangle area and at least 35 Education PDUs, click "Apply for Renewal." Pay the fee ($60 member / $150 non-member) and your certification is renewed instantly. Your new CCR cycle starts from your previous expiry date.

Log PDUs as you earn them — not all at once. PMI's audit algorithm flags large batches of PDUs logged in a short period, especially near the renewal deadline. Logging steadily throughout your cycle looks far more natural and reduces your audit risk significantly.

FAQ

PDUs for PMP Renewal — Common Questions

What counts as a PDU for PMP renewal?
A PDU is one hour of qualifying professional development activity. This includes structured learning (courses, webinars, conferences), self-directed learning (reading, podcasts, online videos), and Giving Back activities (volunteering, mentoring, creating content, working as a practitioner). The activity must relate to project management, leadership or business skills. Not all activities qualify — personal hobbies, general exercise or unrelated professional development do not count.
How many free PDUs can I earn for PMP renewal?
You can realistically earn 25–35 of your 60 PDUs for free. The main free sources are: working as a PM practitioner (8 PDUs/cycle), PMI free webinars (unlimited for members), PMI chapter events (4–8/year), volunteering and mentoring (unlimited), PM podcasts and audiobooks (1 PDU/hour), reading PM books (1 PDU/hour), and YouTube courses (1 PDU/hour). The remaining PDUs can be topped up with a low-cost Udemy course if needed.
Does working as a project manager count as PDUs?
Yes — "Working as a Practitioner" is a Giving Back PDU category that earns 1 PDU for every 8 hours of PM work, up to a maximum of 8 PDUs per CCR cycle. Log this in the CCRS under "Working as a Practitioner." It is the easiest PDUs you will earn — your job is already doing the work for you.
Can I earn PDUs by reading books or listening to podcasts?
Yes — both count as self-directed Education PDUs. One hour of reading or listening equals one PDU. Log under "Online or Digital Media" or "Self-Directed Learning" in the CCRS. Record the title, approximate hours and the Talent Triangle area that best matches the content. Keep notes in case of audit — a brief description of what you read and when is sufficient.
Can unused PDUs carry over to the next cycle?
Partially — up to 20 excess PDUs earned in the final year of your cycle can roll over to the next cycle. PDUs earned in year 1 or year 2 that exceed 60 cannot carry over. This is a minor benefit and should not change your strategy — the goal is to earn PDUs steadily throughout each cycle, not to hoard them.
What happens if I am audited by PMI?
Being audited is random and does not mean you have done anything wrong. If audited, PMI will ask you to submit documentation for the PDUs you claimed. For courses and webinars: completion certificates. For practitioner work: an employer letter or project records. For self-directed learning: a log of resources with dates and hours. Keep documentation for at least 12–36 months after renewal. If you cannot provide evidence, those PDUs can be removed from your total.
Do Udemy courses count as PDUs?
Yes — Udemy PM courses count as self-directed Education PDUs. Look for courses that explicitly mention PDU approval and provide a PDU certificate upon completion. Log them under "Online or Digital Media" in the CCRS. Udemy courses regularly go on sale for $13–$19 and a 10-hour course gives you 10 PDUs — one of the best-value paid PDU sources available.
