The summary sits directly below your name and is the first thing a hiring manager reads. It has to earn their attention in under 10 seconds. Here is a proven formula:

Tailoring Keywords to the Job Description

Generic resumes get generic results. For every role you apply to, spend 10 minutes reviewing the job description and match your resume's language to theirs. If they say "programme governance" — use that exact phrase, not "project oversight." If they list specific tools — add them to your technical skills section if you have used them. ATS systems match exact strings, not synonyms.

What Changes at Each Experience Level

The structure stays consistent across all levels — but the emphasis, length and content shift significantly as you move from junior to senior.

Junior PM / Coordinator (0–3 years)
Lead with your certification and transferable skills
At this level, you likely do not have standalone PM roles yet. Lead with CAPM certification and any PM training completed. In your experience section, surface any coordination, planning or leadership responsibilities from non-PM roles. Use a strong objective statement explaining your PM transition. Keep to one page. Include any PM software you have used — even Trello or basic Excel project tracking counts.
Mid-Level PM (3–7 years)
Emphasis on project scale and measurable outcomes
This is where PMP becomes essential. Every bullet in your experience section should have at least one number. Show progression across roles — increasing budget sizes, larger teams, more complex projects. Highlight methodology proficiency (Agile + Waterfall) and specific PM tools. One to two pages. Your summary should lead with PMP certification and a strong achievement figure.
Senior PM / Programme Manager (8+ years)
Emphasise programme scope, strategic impact and leadership
At senior level, hiring managers want to see portfolio-level thinking, executive stakeholder management and strategic impact — not just on-time delivery. Show budget sizes in the millions, team sizes in the dozens, and outcomes tied to business strategy. Two pages is acceptable. Consider adding a "Key Projects" or "Career Highlights" section near the top for your most impressive achievements. PgMP or MSP certification strengthens your profile significantly at this level.
