CV — Cost Variance

SV — Schedule Variance
EV − PV
CPI — Cost Performance
EV ÷ AC
SPI — Schedule Performance
EV ÷ PV
EAC — Estimate at Completion
BAC ÷ CPI
ETC — Estimate to Complete
EAC − AC
VAC — Variance at Completion

📌
PMP exam tip: CPI > 1.0 means you are spending less than planned (under budget). SPI > 1.0 means you are ahead of schedule. Both below 1.0 means the project is in trouble on both fronts. The exam tests your ability to interpret these numbers in scenario questions — not just calculate them.

Which Tool Do You Need?

A quick guide to matching your situation to the right tool — whether you are studying for the PMP, managing a live project or presenting to stakeholders.

For PMP Candidates

Start with the PMP Eligibility Checker to confirm you qualify before spending time on study. Once confirmed, use the EVM Calculator daily while working through EVM practice questions — inputting the numbers from exam scenarios to check your working and build fluency with the formulas. The PM Salary Calculator is useful motivation — see what the certification is worth in your country before you invest in preparation.

For Working Project Managers

💼
Running a project? Use the EVM Calculator for your weekly status reports — it outputs CPI and SPI in seconds. Use the Gantt Chart Maker when you need a quick schedule visual for a client or stakeholder presentation. Use the Project Budget Calculator during project initiation to build your Budget at Completion with appropriate contingency reserves built in.

For Students & Career Changers

The Critical Path Calculator is invaluable for understanding network diagrams and float calculations — a topic that appears in every PM textbook and exam. The PM Salary Calculator shows you realistic earning benchmarks by country and experience level, which is useful for setting career goals and evaluating job offers.

⚠️
Bookmark this page. These tools are updated regularly. The EVM calculator is aligned with PMBOK 7 terminology. The PMP eligibility checker reflects the current PMI ECO 2023 requirements. Formulas and thresholds are reviewed every quarter.

PM Tools — 6 Questions Answered

An EVM (Earned Value Management) calculator computes all key project performance metrics from three inputs: Planned Value (PV), Earned Value (EV) and Actual Cost (AC). It instantly calculates Cost Variance (CV), Schedule Variance (SV), Cost Performance Index (CPI), Schedule Performance Index (SPI), Estimate at Completion (EAC), Estimate to Complete (ETC) and Variance at Completion (VAC). Use our free EVM calculator →
To check PMP eligibility you need to verify three things: education level (4-year degree or high school diploma), project leadership experience (36 months with a degree, 60 months with a diploma — within the last 8 years) and formal PM training (35 contact hours minimum). Our free PMP eligibility checker gives you an instant result, or use the checker embedded above on this page.
A Gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart that visualises a project schedule — tasks on the vertical axis, time on the horizontal. Each bar shows a task's start, duration and end. Dependencies are shown as connecting lines. Our free Gantt chart maker lets you build one in minutes with no software to install and export it to PDF or image.
The critical path is the longest chain of dependent tasks that determines minimum project duration. To find it: list all tasks with durations and dependencies, run a forward pass (earliest start and finish), run a backward pass (latest start and finish), then calculate float for each task (latest start minus earliest start). Tasks with zero float are on the critical path. Our free critical path calculator does all of this automatically.
A project budget includes: direct costs (labour, materials, equipment), indirect costs (overheads), contingency reserve (typically 5–15% of direct costs for identified risks) and management reserve (typically 5–10% for unknown risks). The total is your Budget at Completion (BAC). Our free project budget calculator handles all components automatically and outputs a presentation-ready summary.
Yes — every tool on this page is completely free with no account required. The EVM calculator, PMP eligibility checker, budget calculator and critical path calculator all run entirely in your browser. We believe project managers should have access to quality tools without barriers. We are funded by AdSense and affiliate commissions on course and software recommendations — never by charging for tools.
