2026 update: what has changed since this checklist was written
The PMP exam has moved on since this post was first published. PMI introduced a new Exam Content Outline (ECO) in July 2026, and the weightings shifted: Process 41%, People 33% and Business Environment 26%. Business Environment used to be only 8%, so strategy, governance, compliance and benefits realisation now carry far more marks. The exam also leans more heavily on agile and hybrid scenarios than on predictive process memorisation.
That means the checklist above still has the right shape, but the sources have changed. Studying the PMBOK Guide 6th Edition on its own is no longer enough.
An updated checklist for the current exam
- The current Exam Content Outline. Download it from PMI and treat it as your syllabus. Every question maps to a task in it.
- A current PMBOK Guide and the Agile Practice Guide. Use them to understand principles, performance domains, tailoring and agile ways of working, not to memorise inputs and outputs.
- A good question bank. Scenario questions in the new style, with explanations for every option.
- Full-length mock exams. Build the stamina to stay focused for the whole exam.
- A mentor or study group. Someone to discuss difficult scenarios with and to keep you accountable.
What to prioritise
- Business Environment topics: benefits realisation, compliance, governance and organisational change.
- Servant leadership, team development and conflict resolution in the People domain.
- Hybrid delivery: when to combine predictive planning with agile execution.
- Core calculations such as earned value, float and communication channels. They still appear, but they are a smaller share than many candidates expect.

How to know you are ready
Book the exam when you are consistently scoring well on full, timed mock exams from a reputable question bank, and when you can explain why each wrong option is wrong. If your scores are uneven across domains, spend another week on the weakest one before you sit the exam.
