02 · The credential

What is PMP certification?

PMP (Project Management Professional) is a certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) that shows you can lead projects using predictive, agile and hybrid approaches. It is recognised in over 200 countries, so a PMP earned in Nigeria is the same credential as one earned in the UK, the US or the Gulf. You keep it active by earning 60 professional development units (PDUs) every three years.

People sometimes search for a “PMP license”. PMP is a certification, not a licence: no Nigerian regulator requires it, but many employers list it as a requirement or a strong advantage for project roles.

04 · Demand

Is PMP in demand in Nigeria?

Yes. PMP is one of the most requested project management credentials in Nigerian job adverts, especially in oil and gas, telecoms, banking, construction and donor-funded development programmes. Multinationals and international oil companies often list PMP as a requirement for project and planning roles, and many Nigerian professionals use it to move into roles in the Gulf, the UK and Canada.

Demand for project professionals is also growing worldwide. PMI estimates the world may need up to 30 million more project professionals by 2035, and PMP is the credential most employers use to shortlist experienced candidates.

Where to take the PMP exam in Nigeria

You can sit the PMP exam at a Pearson VUE test centre in Lagos or Abuja, or online from home with Pearson VUE’s online proctoring. The exam takes 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks, so you need power and internet you can rely on for over four hours.

✦
Online or test centre? If you live outside Lagos or Abuja, the online exam saves travel, but a power or network cut can end it. Use a UPS or inverter, keep a mobile hotspot ready and run Pearson VUE’s system test first. If your power supply is unreliable, travel to a test centre.
